A member asked:

One of my classmates committed suicide. if the web says that 97% of suicide attempts fail, how was he able to get it right on the first try?

Lethality of attempt: Per your statistics, 3% succeed, and unfortunately your friend was one of those. Suicide attempts vary widely in both lethal intent and lethality of method. Overdoses with some pills may cause only prolonged sleep, while overdoses with others (especially if mixed with alcohol) are rapidly fatal. Jumping, firearms, and hanging are highly lethal methods, more likely to succeed on the first try.

Suicide: This is a very difficult question to answer without knowing many facts. Sometimes, in general, an individual is so depressed that they long for relief and death seems attractive . I am very sorry for your loss and for this awful tragedy. Suicide is always extremely difficult to understand but of those that survive they often say they mistakenly believed they were a burden to others.

Intent: Most likely because he had very serious intent and that it was well planned out. And what was going on emotionally? Either he didn't have the words to communicate and he was bottling his feelings, or he was trying and nobody was listening. Either way we have a tragedy.
