Depends: This depends on the cause, level, & type of elevated bilirubin (conjugated vs unconjugated). There are many causes of high bilirubin levels, some of which are relatively benign, and some that may be serious. In some cases, high bilirubin may cause yellowing of the skin/eyes or increased risk for gallstones. In newborns, a significantly high bilirubin is dangerous due to the risk of brain damage.

Depends: High bilirubin can be due to various type of diseases, including liver diseases, blood disorders.  I am not sure whether your other liver tests are normal or not. If you have this for long time, you should seek medical attention. Transient minimal or mild high bilirubin can be benign also.

: If you truly have Gilbert's, which is benign, why would you want to treat it?  Milk thistle will not change the bilirubin profile.

Not Usually: For many labs that value is normal, or close to normal.  However, even when high, isolated elevated bilirubin (no other liver labs are high) is usually due to a condition known as gilbert's syndrome, and is not worrisome.  You may find other family members have this as well, as it is genetic.

i take testcypimate i've had blood work and my t count was high as well as my bilirubin level 1.8. everything else was normal, should i be concered?

Needs follow up: Your testesterone replacement should not get your serum level higher than about 1000 (depending on the lab). It can cause some liver issues that could increase your bilirubin so this does need to be addressed by your doctor, but i would assume cutting back on the replacement will get both things back in range.

Sounds fine to me: You're a young man, i'm betting you feel fine, and you're not a bunch of numbers. This is high-end-of-normal, i'm going to assume it's mostly indirect, and several percent of folks run high because of gilbert's non-disease -- a variant biochemistry.

Which test: Yes. If it's total bilirubin then it's high. But I think the 21 isn't a total value. Please post the kind of bilirubin that was measured.

Ultrasound will: ...check the liver, the biliary tree, and the pancreas--pathology in any or all of these structures may cause hyperbilirubinemia even in the absence of a gallbladder.

It doesnot: Strenuous exercise might increase liver enzymes due to leakage from muscle. This should not increase your bilirubin. In patients with gilbert syndrome- bilirubin may increase with fasting, fever and possibly strenuous exercise.

i just got blood work done and noticed my bilirubin and alt level were slightly elevated. alt 48u/l  & bilirubin, total 1.9mg/dl. should i be concerned my this and what should i do to reduce it?

Accepted Answer

: Not necessarily a problem at this point, but you could ask about Gilbert's syndrome.  If you drink alcohol or use recreational drugs, one or the other may affect liver function, and could be stopped for 60 days, and blood studies repeated.  Discuss all of this with the doctor who ordered the blood studies.  No urgent action needed currently but glad you are proactive.
