: Medical therapy for gallstones is typically reserved for patients who are not candidates for surgery or unwilling to have surgery. Some treatments include, but are not limited to, ursodeoxycholic acid (a bile salt medication) or extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy. Generally speaking, surgical intervention is discouraged for patients who are asymptomatic and without complications.

Accepted Answer

Yes, but...: ....I recommend surgery.  Back in the 1980s, when we first developed lithotripsy (shock wave rx) for removal of kidney stones, we experimented with this for gallstones.  Similarly, there are medications that can dissolve some gallstones.  Alternative therapies advocate "gallbladder flushes".  Unfortunately, all of these leave behind the "gallstone factory"; the best treatment at present is surgery.

i was diagnosed with bilary colic and gallstones last week. i have gallbladder removal surgery in 2 weeks. i haven't had another attack, but keep having sharp sticking pains where gb is. is this normal and can i treat with advil?

Surgery: With upcoming surgery I recommend avoiding medication like Advil which can potentiate bleeding. Take acetomeniphen, but don't exceed the recommended doses and don't mix with alcohol intake. If your discomfort worsens, notify your surgeon for instructions.

Can see one's doctor: Also, research results seem to show that marijuana can start a person's schizophrenia sooner than if she did not use weed. A teenager (with a brain, neurotransmitters, and receptors not fully developed), especially with a family history of schizophrenia or psychosis, should know her family history and avoid experimenting with weed or any illegal drug that might have a similar effect on her brain.

Healthy diet: If stones are incidental discovery not giving any symptoms , could be observed , small stones may enter biliary ducts may cause complications, stay in good healthy diet , fresh vegetables, non fried low fat diet , do not eat junk food , along with plenty of exercise ,  hope you will never get a gall bladder  attack . Gallstones: Once your biliary system makes gallstones it is ongoing. Passing the gallstones can be dangerous, if the stones get stuck in the duct system. I am not sure if "flushes" really work. However, avoiding fatty foods, increasing your hydration does help to control symptoms. Gallbladder removal with surgery is nearly always curative, as the stones originate in the gallbladder. Take friend to consult.

Currently most surgical facilities have much safer policies to protect the entire health care delivery team of potential contaminants by following universal precaution protocols.

Pain and nausea: Upper abdominal pressure discomfort with gas and bloated feeling after eating, may get upper abdominal pain and nausea, sometimes vomiting. Worse after eating some fatty or greasy foods. Pain can go into the right upper abdomen.

Depends: If the gallstones are symptomatic, take the gall bladder out. If they were noted incidentally on an x ray but have not caused any pain or obstruction, follow a low fat diet. Meds don't really help and carry a lot of side effects.
