Excellent question: I am not an authority on this subject. But i suspect that they brought some medicines with them from the east. They likely were taught remedies by indians.  My mother was a forager & it is amazing how many things can be remedied by plants in the woods. I know that many pioneers died from their illnesses.

Fever, headache, etc: Most infections are without symptoms.  20% get west nile fever.  Less than 1% of those with wn fever get neurologic problems.  Symptoms of wn fever: sudden fever, fatigue, headache, body aches, skin rash. Symptoms of neuro-invasive disease:  neck stiffness, confusion, seizures, paralysis (inability to move) similar to polio.

Westward ho!: Melatonin is very helpful when traveling West, maybe even more so than traveling East. That said, there should be no harm from taking it in both directions.

Clocks out of synch: Jet lag is a mismatch between your internal clock and the external world.  This happens when you travel east or west (less so with westbouond travel)  often you will feel fatigued, have poor appetite and may have trouble sleeping. Sunlight and melatonin set your internal clock. To treat it get out into the sunlight, eat at regular times, and take melatonin if you have trouble falling asleep.

Clear after 14 days: The incubation period for West Nile virus is reported to be 2-14 days for onset of symptoms after a bite, so by day 15 one should be worry free if no symptoms.
