Hives: Are you taking any medications? Do you have any signs of infection-sore throat, urinary problems, cough? Do you eat foods such as strawberries, peanuts, chocolate or other foods that cause you to itch? Were you exposed to any envoronmental allergies- mold, dust, trees etc? You can take antihistamine. If it perssits see md for history, blood tests, and treatment.

Itching no rash: Commonest cause of itching without rash is dry skin.Other is scabies which is ccaused by a mite which buries under the skin and causes intense itching
other rare causes are liver and kidney diseases
you can consult your family doctor or a dermatologist to find the cause.

Itch begets itch: Your 5 year old son has sensitive skin and might be dry. There is a term called dermatographism when you turn red in the areas that you scratch.  This redness looks like hives.  There is no known cause, but sometimes heat makes it worse and antihistamines help. Cool refrigerated moisturizers always help too.

Visit your doc: Someone need to see the rash of both of you. It can be fungal infection or scabies, or something else. Visit your doctor.

See dermatologist: If the itching is so bothersome, you should consult a dermatologist since dry skin is apparently not the issue. The itch pathway is far more complex than we had thought and no longer just a matter of histaminic action.  (I assume you have tried antihistamine already. If not, you may give it a try).

Unsure.: Check for possible clot. Did you scratch/rub it & cause cellulitis? Insect bite, contusion, varicose vein, contact detnatitis, etc. Are also possibilities. Get it checked if painful.

Drug reaction: If you have started taking any new medications that caused the rash then try stopping the medicin ad see if it will improve other wise you have to see your doctor could be serious.
