how can i combat antipsychotic weight gain? im on latuda, which is considered weight neutral but its not. i only gained 20lbs-25lbs, along with high cholesterol. luckily it didnt affect blood sugar. not sure what to do?

: Eat less and/or exercise more.  Get the app Cronometer and track what you eat and exercise for a week.  You will see where the calories are coming from. Decide how to lower calories till you start losing weight. Easy in concept, difficult in execution.  Discuss with your Dr.

Antipsychotics: Ziprazadone-Geodon and Lurasidone-Latuda, in my experience, are associated with weight loss. Quetiapine-Seroquel and Olanzapine-Zyprexa, cause the most weight gain, again in my experience. Those are all considered Second Generation Antipsychotics or Atypicals. All First Generation Antipsychotics cause weight gain. Great question. Wt gain is an important issue and preventing it can be a challenge.

Reduce carbs & walk: This is always a challenge, but some consistent daily walking for 20-30 min and strictly limiting fast carbs (refined sweets, cakes, candy, bread, pretzels, crackers, rice, pasta, potatoes) will really help.

Tough question: Redirect this question to the doctor who prescribes the Insulin and Metformin because you have to consider what the medication might do to your blood sugar level, not just appetite or weight. I'm not blowing you off...i just don't want to point you in the wrong direction. The combination of diabetes medications requires that you be monitored closely on any new medication.

Zyprexa--weight gain: First, both are very good antipsychotics.  Invega Sustenna specifically is a long-acting shot.  So it doesn't need to be taken daily.  Invega is similar to Risperdal but developed to have fewer side effects for some people.  Zyprexa comes in tablets and long-acting shots and works very well for many people.  But, it is well known for causing significant weight gain in some people.

It's an antipsychotic with potential side effects [like weight gain] best avoided unless you truly need its antipsychotic activity.
