Several: Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are not risk-free. Short-term complications occur mainly due to extravasation of the cement and can include increased pain and damage from heat or pressure to the spinal cord or nerve roots as well as cement embolization. Long-term problems include local acceleration of bone resorption caused by the treatment itself and new vertebral fractures.

Vertebroplasty : Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are procedures that treat vertebral compression fractures with injecting liquid plastic.  Kyphoplasty has an additional step of creating a space prior to injection.  Occasionally you can get a little reduction of the fracture with kyphoplasty.  It is controversial which one is better.  Sometimes certain fractures lend themselves better to one or the other procedure.  Both procedures usually provide quick pain relief.   Please see my health guide on vertebral compression fractures. having peripheral neuropathy on right side waist area with a slight bulge. very painful. had kyphoplasty on 10/04. bulge is not gastrointestinal or hernia or gallbladder. what can it be? neurosurgeon isn't helpful?

: The tender bulge has nothing to do with peripheral neuropathy, I think. If you had been examined by a doctor and the mentioned problems were ruled out, you need to have either ultrasound or CT for further evaluation. A tender mass is somewhat consistent with an abscess but neurosurgeon should easily recognize it.

i have a large bulge on my right side just below my ribs. it's getting harder. ct scan normal except for a dilated transverse colon 7cm and dilated bile duct 6.8 cm. can't see gastro doc till end of nov. had kyphoplasty 2 wks ago. i'm worried?

: Is dilated bile duct 6.8 cm a typo? If it is the correct bile duct size, you should go to ER.

Controversial: These procedures can improve the pain on osteoporosis related compression fractures in the elderly.  Unfortunately, they can also increase the risk of adjacent level fractures in these patients.  hence, I suggest patients try bracing before these procedures.  If the bracing is not effective for pain control, then these procedures can certainly help with pain control

Compression Fracture: Vertebroplasty is a procedure designed for the treatment of osteoporotic compression fractures.  A needle is inserted through the back into the vertebral body with a painful compression fracture.  A bone cement is injected into the bone with fluoroscopic guidance.  The cement will harden in 5-10 minutes.  It can result in immediate relief of pain due to the compression fracture.

what are the realistic results i should expect from a vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty? what should my realistic expectations be about my vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty?  what are the limitations of these procedures?

The : The results from clinical studies have been controversial.  I have found very good results with vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty if you have recent fracture, back tenderness and acute to subacute (recent) swelling of your fracture on MRI and do not have back nerve or spinal cord compression or instability in the spine.  Most people pain improve between 50 to 100%.  Even though uncommon these procedures may have significant risks.  I would discuss the risks and the benefits of those procedures with your spine surgeon.  Good luck!

what is the difference between a vertebroplasty and a kyphoplasty? it seems like vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty are always mentioned together.  why are they still separate?  what is the difference between these two procedures?

Vertebroplasty : Vertebroplasty is the direct injection of plastic into the fractured bone.   Kyphoplasty a cavity to hold the plastic is made first prior to injecting.  Occasionally the fracture can be partially reduced (return to non fractured state) during cavity formation.  Overall they are very similar procedures.

what are kyphoplasty procedures?

For compression fx: These are  procedures done for osteoporotic compression fractures that may not be able to be treated non operatively, usually about 10% go to surgery -a kyphoplasty is the initial insertion of a baloon-like device inflated and then removed  to restore height of the compressed fracture and then a fill with "bone cement"restoring spinal alignment  and stability with good pain relief.
