For compression fx: These are procedures done for osteoporotic compression fractures that may not be able to be treated non operatively, usually about 10% go to surgery -a kyphoplasty is the initial insertion of a baloon-like device inflated and then removed to restore height of the compressed fracture and then a fill with "bone cement"restoring spinal alignment and stability with good pain relief.

Vertebral augment: Kyphoplasty is a type of vertebral augmentation to treat spinal compression fractures which have failed conservative management. Using imaging guidance and small incisions small needles are guided into the vertebral body, a cavity is created by inflating a balloon, and pmma cement in carefully injection. In the right hands it is very safe and can effectively improve pain and prevent height loss.
