Most Important: The most important things to consider are: are you in pain AND are you passing gas? If you are passing gas, and not in pain, these are good signs.

Possibly: The correct term is malrotation. This causes a twist in the intestine which cuts off the blood supply. This necessitates removal of a portion of dead intestine. Another term used is volvulus.

Think garden hose: The intestines are a complex & long tubular structure with some parts firmly attached & some parts that float somewhat freely in the abdomen. If the free floating parts become twisted on them self, it not only stops flow as it would in your hose, it can begin to cut off the blood supply. If left untreated, the gut can die & start leaking contents & germs into the abdomen. This can be fatal.

Xray or CT: Either of the above will detect a volvulus and based on the findings, appropriate therapy will be initiated. Most common types are sigmoid and cecal.

Till end of volvulus: Once the volvulus is resolved or corrected it may take 24 hours for normal gut function to resume. If surgery is required to correct the volvulus then it can be 2-3 days.

Yes, but: Occassional the volvulus can be resolved with a barium enema xray or with a colonoscope, however they will most often recur and ultimately will probably require surgical correction. In either case it should be managed and supervised by a surgeon.

Yes, : Not common, but possible, and it is surgical emergency if it is acute.  Commonly, it happens in a paraesophageal hiatal hernia.
