Has anyone out there treated a cecal volvulus conservatively?

Dr. Eric Kaplan answered

Specializes in Colon and Rectal Surgery

Yes, but: Occassional the volvulus can be resolved with a barium enema xray or with a colonoscope, however they will most often recur and ultimately will probably require surgical correction. In either case it should be managed and supervised by a surgeon.

Depends: Generally, right colectomy. Cecal fixation has been tried.

Yes; poor results.: Treatment that does not remove the right colon is associated with a very high recurrence rate. While colon resection does have risks that must be considered, there is a significant mortality rate seen with repeat volvulus.

Yes: It can be treated with a lower GI contrast study (barium enema) or endoscopically.
