I'm pleased you are: trying to improve the nutrition in your diet. This is the best way to get needed vitamins and minerals. Foods high in vitamin A: sweet potatoes, beef, liver, spinach, fish, milk, eggs, carrots.  Vitamin C: sweet red peppers (!), oranges, kiwi, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cantaloupe.  Vitamin E: wheat germ, sunflower seeds, almonds.  Happy Healthy Eating!

A, D, E, B6: One can consume too much of the fat-soluble vitamins, which are a, d & e, but one generally has to take massive amounts to get into trouble. Taking 25, 000 units of a for many months can be toxic (but if pregnant much lower levels are toxic) . Vit d toxicity has not been reported with doses under 40, 000 iu/day. Doses of e over 1500 iu/day may cause bleeding. B6 over 250 mg/day can cause neuropathy.

When you're old!: There are 2 reasons to take vitamins:
to treat symptoms of deficiency or prevent disease. If to treat symptoms you'll know if you feel better over time (many take several weeks), If for prevention when you reach 90 you will know. You can get a blood test to measure D levels- normal is at least 30, optimal 50-80; and take more D if needed.

If you are asking if children need to be given extra a and c, then the answer depends on the quality of the diet. The better and more varied the diet, the less likely a child will need to be given vitamins.  Except d, which is hard to get from food.  Supplement with d.

Never: Many people believe that getting essential nutrition from a pill is advisable. Many large studies have shown that it's not. Get your essential vitamins from food such as fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, seeds, whole grains, and fish like wild salmon. Get 15 or so minutes of sun each day. All the vitamins, minerals, and other healthy nutrients in whole foods will trounce the pills any and every day.
