Yes. Get sensible sun: Low vitamin d concentrations such as those described are very common in the us population. They are especially common in persons who are homebound, drink little vitamin d fortified milk, and or have darker skin color. The best way to prevent low vitamin d is to take a multivitamin, drink vitamin d fortified milk, and to get 10 to 15 minutes of sensible sun exposure  daily during the summer months. This means exposing at least your arms and legs 10 to 15 minutes prior to putting on sunscreen.

: 50,000 units/week for 3 months would replenish your stores. You may take 4000 units a day for as long as you like without risk of toxicity. It is better to take vitamin D3 than D2.

Low vitamin D: I prescribe this for my patients; 50, 000iu vitamin d is used to treat vitamin d deficiency, which was probably discovered in bloodwork you did. This high dosage is taken once a week x 8 or 12 weeks or so, then people are usually able to start a regular daily vitamin d pill after that.

Don't Take D2!!!: This is the wrong kind of vit. D to take! the 50, 000 unit dose of vit d is the prescription form, vitamin d2. Research has shown this type does more harm than good, increasing mortalityi i advise that most adults take  5000 units/day of vitamin d3 to achieve optimal levels. Take after a meal. Vitamin d low : Studies have shown that it may not be best to take such high doses of vitamin D. If it is recommended at that dose of  50,000  IU, it is usually provided once a week. Speak to your doctor, your vitamin d level is low.

Less D: As a male, you should be able to get sufficient calcium from your diet as long as you drink milk and eat dairy and veggies without problems. 2000 units of vitamin d3/day is all you really need, some will be in your diet. You won't find calcium with 5000 units of d, as that's excessive and not allowed to be sold.

How low?: Vitamin D deficiency interferes with bone and bones become soft if vitamin D and calcium are deficient. Loss of bone calcium gets exaggerated around menopause. You may take what your doctor prescribed or you may take 3000-4000 units of vitamin D3 daily.
