Yes, it could: Yes, vitamin d deficiency could cause fatigue and depression.  Talk with your doctor about replenishing this.  With your very low level, you may need high dosing with it temporarily, and then back off to a maintenance dose.  Please be aware that it's also possible to have multiple conditions at once, all of which need treatment (depression, anxiety , and vit d deficiency, etc).

Likely: One recent study showed vitamin d deficiency to be linked to depression in a small group of women between 42 and 66 years of age. After that the guidelines for daily intake of vitamin d were raised top 600 units/day for adults under 70. However, be aware that there are many other causes for depression which could be present in the same person, including thyroid disease, diabetes, stress and so on.

Yes: Anecdotally most of my patient with vit d deficiency who feel sad or depressed feel better once they start taking supplements, but I do not think that has been formally studied.

Not cause, but....: It's a really important deficiency to correct as well and soon as possible. here are links to depression reported and even to thought disorders, but all mental symptoms can overlap and if anxiety is a tendency for you, a D deficiency might contribute to you feel that way. Work w/ a doctor or read nutritional info to get that corrected. CBT can also help treat anxiety. Best!

i was diagnosed with vitamin d deficiency & anxiety. i am having leg weakness in one leg, nausea and some lightheadedness for a few days now. i don't take my prescription vitamin d like i should. could this be anxiety or possibly lack of vitamin d?

: Focal leg weakness is not a manifestation of Vitamin D deficiency and needs to be evaluated ASAP, especially when associated with additional symptoms.  The leg problem will exacerbate your anxiety so address this promptly, but anxiety does not cause your described symptoms.  Contact your doctor.

NotTooLowVitD: You are making yourself sick with extreme anxiety.First of all low vitamin level at 25 is low but not too low and usually does not cause any symptoms.Secondly D3 supplementation with 1000 unit a day is a small dose and does not cause any problems with joints and heart.You have to learn to relax and the only way you can address low vitamin D of 25 is by taking vitamin d to increse the level to&gt;30

Unlikely: It is hard to get symptomatic vitamin d deficiency just because you're a vegetarian.  There are plenty of sources of vitamin d in some vegetables.  If you eat dairy as well, then you're likely getting enough vitamin d.  Plus, living in southern california (as it looks like you're in), you get plenty of sun so you get plenty of vitamin d conversion.  But you can always get your level checked.

Bone maturity study: Any potential for further growth would be evident on a simple x-ray of his wrist/hand. This site has dozens of growth plates that have been studied over the years &amp; give reliable estimates of bone maturity. If his bone maturity matches his age &amp; the growth centers are closed he is done growing taller &amp; HGH won't help.If more like a 14 yo he might grow more naturally.

Not bad, but stop D2: 50,000iu/week of Vit D is reasonable. It would be safe to continue this indefinitely. However, I strongly advise taking only Vit D3,not D2 Usually the 50,000 iu dose is the prescription form (D2) which is actually dangerous! See http://tinyurl.com/6wx4ujl
I advise stopping D2. Take 5-8000iu of D3/day. I also ask you to share this info with the prescribing Dr. as they must be unaware of the hazard.
