i was told by my doctor to start taking vitamin b complex. i purchased some at the drug store and noticed the vitamin b12 in it has 15 mcg, is that to much vitamin b12? will it give me jitters and cause my heat to race?

Accepted Answer

: It is unlikely that you will ingest too much vitamin B12 because excess amounts leave the body through urine. If your urine is bright yellow, it is most likely that you are taking in more B vitamins than you really need.  Expensive urine, but not dangerous.

No: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that,  your blood level of B12 is not a cause for concern.

: The is not much harm in accidentally doing this, but the question should be: Why would you? B complex already includes B12. Supplemental B vitamins are only given if there is a vitamin deficiency, a dietary restriction, or a medical problem requiring treatment.

Yes: It is near impossible to overdose on B12 as it is water soluble and easily excreted. My question is do you have a known deficiency or not? If so, levels should be followed by your physician. If not, you probably aren't gaining too much from these high levels besides a lot of B12 in your urine.

Paradox: When you start the correct vitamin treatment there is a paradoxical increase in symptoms that is temporary. Continue and these symptoms will disappear.

i have low b12=128, and i had symptoms like depression, and i need the right dose ..and i'm worried if taking b12 alone will affect b complex balance?

Won't affect them: The "b complex" vitamins are really unrelated other than in name. B12 is a water soluble vitamin and must be taken daily in food or supplement.  B12 deficiency results in anemia and nerve cell injury.  128 is low and you should certainly follow your doctor's advice for diet and supplement use. Also you need to determine if it is just nutritional or if you have a problem absorbing the vitamin.

Should not: Be a problem. Will give you folate (folic acid) and cover all the building blocks for blood cell production.

A supplement: Containing the group of b vitamins, so yes. However the problem with b 12 is usually with absorption so a pill may not be the answer for established deficiency.

OK but not 4 absorb.: It is perfectly fine to take b complex/b12 with magnesium but won't enhance absorption. Magnesium is best absorbed on an empty stomach ; b vits can cause stomach upset on empty stomach. B vits, esp. B6, often work in synergy with mag. The best-absorbed forms of mag. Are glycinate ; taurate; citrate is ok too. Epsom salt baths ; topical "magnesium oil" are also good ways to get magnesium into you.

NO (unless...): B12 and B complex are often combined together and are extremely safe.  I've given this combo to many people and the only side effect I've seen is temporary pain at the injection site.Of course I always give in in the hip region or arm. 
The only way I could see this happening is if it was actually injected into the person's face and damaged a nerve, but it should always be given in a large muscle.
