Soaks and get help: If it is an infected ingrown hair or an infected cyst(more likely), you should see a surgeon who will place you on antibiotics and then lance or remove when ready . Meanwhile place warm soaks to the area; but do get checked!

Seek a Professional: Removing an ingrown hair is minor surgery, but still carries risks like infection, bleeding and recurrence. Home surgery is not recommended except maybe, rarely in very dire circumstances. Your problem is elective and correctable with proper care. Seek proper care before it becomes infected on its own.

Antibiotics: you could try some topical antibiotic cream or gel.  If worsen ask a doc for an oral antibiotic.  I do not recommend squeezing it though.

Cyst: You likely have an infected cyst. See a doctor who can give you an antibiotics and use warm soaks . It may need drainage as well.

Details matter: Where on your body? How large? How long? Every hair has an associated oil gland secreting sebum. An ingrown hair may have a blocked oil gland at it's root which may form a pocket (cyst) of sebum. There may also be residual swelling, inflammation which can subside over a week or 2. If you are concerned, a dermatologist can easily take care of it.

Get it checked: This may be an infection.  You should get it checked by your doctor to see if you need antibiotics. In the meantime you can apply warm compresses over it to see ifit will point to the surface and drain.  No gaurantees.

See Doctor: It could be one of many things. Like a sweat gland infection (hydradenitis suppurativa) or it may be an infected lymph gland or something else.

You shouldn't: dermatologic conditions are hard to discuss without seeing them. Should not dig into skin without specific training or it will cause damage and/or infection. Any urgent care or Er or dermatologist can take care of it.

Hot soaks. Acne crea: Hot soaks or soak in hot tub of water (hot as you can stand without burning yourself). Can also try applying acne cream like oxy 10 or cleracil or other benzoylperoxide cream (acne cream) to try and treat the infection.  If it does not improve in 2-3 days or you develop increasing pain, swelling, redness, fevers...need to see health care provider right away.  Hope this helps.  Good luck.

No waxing or shaving: Tretinoin (retin-a) cream can help decrease skin plugging or hyperkaratosis. Topical tretinoin cream may thin out the epidermis, reduce the buildup of dead skin cells, and decrease hair embedding into the follicies. Topical corticosteroid creams with a mild strength can be applied to reduce inflammation of inflamed ingrown hairs.
