Get medical care: Your daughter needs to see a doctor.  If she has all those symptoms she may have pneumonia and will need to be treated.  If she is breathing rapidly or with difficulty she will need medical care. In most instances, ventolin/ albuterol syrup has fallen out of favor as treatment for asthma and wheezing.

Ventolin inhaler: The preferred route of administration for ventolin (albuterol) is by inhaler with holding chamber or via nebulizer.  While ventolin syrup is still available, it's use is uncommon as there are significantly more side effects and doesn't work better than the inhaled route.

Viral Bronchiolitis?: I think your baby may have a viral bronchiolitis (cold with deep cough/wheeze). Treatment is a bit controversial. Some will use saline for the nose (spray/drops) and many will opt for asthma like care. Oral albuterol has grown out of favor for nebulizer treatments in the us. Albuterol is probably the main medication give via aerosol 3-4 times daily to help the cough and congestion.

: I am surprised anyone still uses it. To get the same effect of inhaled Ventolin the oral product must be taken at a higher dose that does have a potential side effect of elevating the blood pressure. I have not used the oral product in practice for decades.

Breathing fast: You can give him both medications, but because he is breathing fast he should be examined to rule out pneumonia or possibly asthma.

Symptoms?: Most practitioners have abandoned the beta-adrenergic-agonist syrups. The efficacy is low and side effects are high. If beta-adrenergics are required experts recommend inhaler or nebulizer.  Having said that, bronchiolitis is usually self-limited. If he is eating, and his breathing is comfortable, i would not do anything except allow him to recover.  If he is more ill, consider another physician.

They are similar.: Albuterol the medication in ventolin comes in several forms, a syrup, pills, a puffer inhaler and a liquid that goes in a nebulizer for breathing treatments.  Salbutamol is a long acting type of bronchodilator similar to albuterol, but instead of lasting 3-4 hrs, it lasts 12 hours.  Both medications are used to treat asthma.

Bronchodilator.: Baby's bronchi have muscle in the walls; part of the problem in bronchiolitis is that they swell and tighten up and narrow the airway. Ventolin causes them to relax so the baby can breathe more easily.
