i have a lump and pain in vein on hand where i recently had an i.v. i have a history of dvt and pe. could this be a clot? should i see my doctor?

Accepted Answer

No: It's a hematoma. It will become discolored if it hasn't already. It's from leakage of blood out of the vein that was used for the IV into the surrounding tissues. It does NOT put you at risk of DVT.  It will resolve in time with no treatment. I can tell you all of this because it's extremely common.

hi doctor; have visible veins on the front of my shin is that normal. should i be worried about dvt?

The skin of the shin: is very thin. (Say that fast three times!) Your veins will be more visible because of the thin skin. In the absence of pain, swelling or warmth in the area it is nothing to worry about.

See below: Ultrasound doppler is the classic test to diagnose dvt. If this gets worse would repeat an ultrasound or see a vascular specialist.

i have aps and fact v leieden. should i be concerned about a "popping" sensation in both of my calves? past dvt, pe and superficial clots.

Yes: With your history of clots and genetic tests, something like that should concern you but most likely is not a clot. Would recommend seeing or calling your doctor for an exam and possible testing. But both calves means less likely to be a clot.

Leg swelling & pain: Acute DVT can result in leg swelling with discomfort or pain. The discomfort and pain can vary in quality, from being quite mild to being severe. In very large dvts with associated massive swelling, the leg may become white or purplish with decreased sensation (numbness, tingling, or no sensation) or movement (including paralysis). This is called phlegmasia alba (white) or cerulea (purple) dolens.

Variable: Trying to make a diagnosis of DVT based upon a history, and findings on examination is hazardous.  Symptoms may be mild soreness of the calf muscle, with or without swelling; feel 
ing as if one has a pulled muscle.  It is best to obtain an ultrasound study of the leg veins to evaluate one for possible dvt.

DVT in pregancy: If i understand your q correctly. Use Lovenox for DVT treatment during pregnancy. Coumadin (warfarin) is contraindicated as it has terotogenic effect. See your local hematologist for special guidance for management of DVT during pregnancy and delivery.

Venous insufficiency: Likely you have venous insufficiency which may or may not be secondary to your precious dvt. If the insufficiency is superficial (a varicose vein or one of the saphenous veins) this can be treated with endovenous ablation or sclerotherapy.  If it is deep, there are fewer procedure options. Either way, compression therapy and a good phlebologist (vein dr) are your friend. Phlebology.Org.

Often related: Chronic venous insufficiency often results after suffering dvt.  Even if the blood clot is cleared out by the body's natural defenses, the venous valves almost always become stuck to the walls of the veins and no longer prevent blood flow from traveling backward with gravity toward the legs and feet. This is what is called venous insufficiency.

what cause my hands and forearms to be severely swollen for 5 days?  ultra sound shows that i do not have dvt.

Need more info: Your hands can swell symmetrically from inflammation in the joints or from edema. There are tests to determine that and find out the cause.
