husband is 42 mitral valve regurgitation, no symptoms, (echo) normal exercise stress test and ekg. the doctor said leak is severe but everything else ok. he is now taking losartan to lessen the force of blood on the veins. can he have sudden death??

: There is not a high risk of sudden cardiac death, however severe mitral regurgitation should be treated by valve repair/replacement for long term outcomes.

Yes: They use a large needle. Put pressure and hold your arm over your head. Not a big deal.

Accepted Answer

Common: Needle entry for blood drawing depends upon the surrounding tissue to seal off the blood flow so it only goes into the needle.  Unfortunately this is imperfect and frequently there will be leakage into the adjacent tissue.  This is usually a tiny amount, and harmless although it might leave a short term tissue stain until your body absorbs the blood.

asked the nurse to confirm if my intamusculer b12 injection in my arm should be aspirated to avoid any veins, the nurse said this was not really necessary.is the nurse correct ?could it cause a problem?i always get slight leaking of blood at site?

: The standard is to always aspirate.  You do not want to be in a vein or artery when injecting vaccinations or anything else.

Nerve damage: This may be nerve damage from your vein procedure. There is a good possibility that such damage will heal but it may take weeks or months. A neurologist is best qualified to evaluate and advise you and any appropriate tests will be ordered.

Hematoma: The venipuncture for blood draw leaked and caused a hematoma outside of the vein or in the vein wall or both and this will heal in most cases without any consequences. I recommend ice in the first 2 days, several times a day (15 min each time) and switch to topical heat on day 3-4 and take ibuprofen as tolerated.

: 'Leakage' occurs when tiny blood vessels break or burst. Clots on the other hand occlude the vessels. But the end result of both is the loss of blood supply to the area and hence harm.

Amsler grid: No nutritional supplements, vitamins, eye drops or medications prevent abnormal blood vessel formation (choroidal neovascularization).  Amsler grid home monitoring and regular eye exams are the best defense.

Blood pressure: At rest. 140/90 is the upper limit of normal, with exercise, over 160/90 is generally considered an increased response to exercise.
