It is difficult: Vasa previa can be difficult to detect because the vessels can collapse and become "invisible.".

Often missed: Vasa previa can be ruled out with a transabdominal ultrasound if the placental cord insertion site can be seen.  Many routine scans do not look for this.  But it is easy to identify.  If it is an area of concern for you, your OB can tell you if it was looked at on your ultrasound.

Here are some...: Are you pregnant? If so, at how many months is the pregnancy? I assumed nearing the term since the placenta previa may be palpable or detected by US. If yes, do not masturbate so to protect the fetus as much as you can until checking with your ob-gyn doctor.

Not increased: Not significantly increased unless first was for previa.

Accepted Answer

Marginal previa: A marginal previa or a low lying placenta is usually diagnosed by ultrasound. Early in a pregnancy ultrasound can over diagnose the condition. Risk will depend upon whether you have had any bleeding with the diagnosis. A 28 week ultrasound is usually recommended to better visualize where the placenta actually is.

is it possible to have placentia previa and still have a natural birth?

Complete previa, no!: If the placenta previa is complete, that is, covers the opening of the cervix(os) absolutely not as when the cervix starts to open during labor then massive hemorrhage will result. If it is a partial previa in early pregnancy, occasionally the growth of the expanding uterus will elevate the placenta away from the cervical os. Most OB's would still consider C/S if ultrasound confirms previa.

No: Placenta previa is a result of the placement of the placenta within the uterus and can not be avoided by exercise.
