It is difficult: Vasa previa can be difficult to detect because the vessels can collapse and become "invisible.".

It is difficult: Vasa previa can easily be missed on a routine sonogram. Detection requires an index of suspicion and use of the doppler color flow mode during the scan. Sometimes, the placenta is composed of two separate lobes. Ifthe sonographer identifies fetal vessels connecting the lobes and crossing close to the cervix (vasa previa), then this kind of unfortunate outcome might be prevented.
