i have noticed a couple of what look like varicose veins underneath my tongue. feel well. no others symptoms. should i be worried? thanks.

Perfectly normal: The tissue is thin there and the veins are close to the surface. Don't worry about this.

the second opinion i got from a dental surgeon, about varicose veins and blue marks, on my tongue said its nothing, but could not tell me why their there?

Most likely: You are born with them ,   with out seeing you hard to give  you opinion , probably you what is known as   av  malformation , if you do not bleed not causing  any symptoms no treatment required.

Not likely...: Most people have visible veins under the tongue.  This is normal and not worrisome for me.  If other symptoms (like pain, swelling, bleeding, lumps etc) show up, ask your favorite dental professional and sort it out then.

Can be: If you have longstanding, untreated varicose veins and complications that we call chronic venous insufficiency, you can develop a venous leg ulcer from that.  Although not usually even potentially dangerous, unless they become infected (which is rare), they can be very difficult to deal with.  Phlebitis is more common in varicose veins and it is possible to get a deep vein thrombus from that.

Options: Depending on the size of the varicose veins, you could try butchers broom or horse chestnut supplements, or may need to see a vascular surgeon for treatment.  There are some laser treatments, but not sure you'd be a candidate without evaluation. Best bet is to see vascular surgeon.

No: Varicose veins are enlargement in the veins of the leg usually from pressure on the venous system thru prolonged standing.  The veins normally have valves to guarantee that return blood to the heart doesn't pool in the legs.  As the valves weaken the downward pressure from standing causes the veins to swell.  This is then managed conservatively with elastic stockings.

No: The risk factors for development of vv are heredity, aging, pregnancy, lifestyle with prolonged standing/sitting, obesity.  Exercise, elevation of legs, and compression hose are good conservative ways to help cope with the symptoms of leg swelling, pain, seen with vv.

Usually yes: Diagnosing varicose veins is usually easily done just by looking.  What is important though, if you have visible varicose veins, is to make sure that your veins that you can't see just by looking--the ones below the surface of the skin-- are evaluated.  This is done with ultrasound.  The reason why this is important is because vein trouble that you can't see often causes trouble you can see.

Define Varicose Vein: This is an abnormal enlarged bulging vein beneath the skin that is under elevated pressure as the result of faulty valves within that section of vein.  Often there is also another underlying deeper faulty vein that is causing the surface vein to devlop &amp; bulge, so ultrasound is recommended to evaluate for a potential underlying source. The blood inside a varicose vein is often traveling backwards.
