i have varicose veins. in one leg, there is a hard, hot and very painful lump. is it a blood clot? can i die from this?

Accepted Answer

Yes and probably not: Sounds like superficial venous thrombphlebitis, which can spread to become deep venous thrombophlebitis, a condition which can cause pulmonary embolism and death.  If you have no calf tenderness or swelling, DVT is not likely.  More concerning is skin erosion, which can lead to bleeding and infection.  Have your doctor look at it.

i fell and burst a varicose veins. the bruise is big and is darkening over the last 24 hours, and there is a tender swollen lump. should i be worried?

Not necessarily: If the bruise/lump is not growing you may wait for it to resolve. It would have been useful to have used cold compress within the first 24 hours. Now you may use a warm compress to facilitate the healing. The bruise will go through color changes. If you develop discharge at the site, swelling increases, you get fever or breathing difficulty, see your doctor.

Superficial: vein phlebitis is probably what it is. Call your doctor who knows your medical history . If you can not a get a hold of your doctor by phone go to urgent care get checked and tested to rule out dvt.

Thrombosis?: A varicose vein can appear lumpy and grape-like.  If it is soft to touch then it is probably a routine varicose vein. If it is hard then it could mean that the blood in the vein clotted .  This is called thrombosis.  If it is hard and tender, then this is called superficial thrombophlebitis. Regardless of what you may have, you should see a vein specialist for a venous evaluation.

Vaginal veins.: What you describe could be varicose veins which have become clotted or they could be cysts.  You should first see your gynecologist for an evaluation and then, if it is a vein problem,  a vein specialist.  Veins in this area are usually treated by sclerotherapy in not clotted and by evacuation  with a tiny needle if clotted.

No: may be a varicosity that has clotted.
Or may be a node due to inflammation.

Doctor can examine: A person whose legs swell up, but has no prior reason for doing so (meaning she doesn't already have a known liver, kidney, heart, or circulation problem that leads to swelling) should be evaluated in the ER. Treatment depends on the amount of swelling, how fast it is increasing, and the actual cause swelling. New swelling in only one leg may mean a deep blood clot in that leg (very serious).

Veins and lumps: Varicose veins are dilated veins...up to where you can feel them easily.  This also allows you to feel the valves that are part of the veins normal structure. Pull up some pics of vein anatomy to reassure yourself.

Abdominal Veins/Mass: Varicose veins are due to malfunctioning valves (reflux) of the saphenous system of veins.  It would be most unlikely for an abdominal mass to cause varicose veins unless the mass is large enough to cause blockage of the deep system of veins on the same side as the varicose veins.  An abdominal mass may cause deep vein system problems but not varicose veins.
