Not really: Although many things can cause orthostatic hypotension, one thing that proably never causes it is varicose veins. On rare occasion, patients have been known to become dizzy on standing (but without orthostaic hypotension), when they have varicose veins, and then have the dizziness go away when their veins are treated. If you have orthostatic hypotension, your veins aren't likely to be the cause.

Genetics, pregnancy,: Varicose veins is caused by genetics, prolonged standing and pregnancy.  Exercise, low salt intake, and losing weight help prevent varicose veins.

Newton's thick skin: An apple hit newton on the head. If newton had sat under apple trees too often, he would need thick  skin! and he had better have strong veins too! lucky people inherit genes for strong veins, but 15% of people don't. Gravity pressurizes vein walls and the weaker veins can't take the stress- they give out and dilate!  one can't change genetics, but fight back with lifestyle and compression socks!

No: The risk factors for development of vv are heredity, aging, pregnancy, lifestyle with prolonged standing/sitting, obesity.  Exercise, elevation of legs, and compression hose are good conservative ways to help cope with the symptoms of leg swelling, pain, seen with vv.

Risk of phlebitis: Varicose veins may clot off, a phenomenon which is known as superficial thrombophlebitis.  This does have an associated risk of dvt.  Venous duplex ultrasound for "reflux" should be obtained, then evlt (or laser tx) may resolve this issue.

Big incompetent vein: Varicose veins are big , several times bigger than normal, incompetent, because the valves in them have failed, veins. Varicose veins can cause cramping and aching in the legs as well as fatigue and other symptoms. Varicose veins most important cause is genetics but staying healthy, active and maintaining an ideal weight helps some with prevention.

Not gravity: Incompetent valves in the venous system of the leg, especially the saphenous vein, lead to varicose veins. Of course, they would not occur except that gravity then pulls the blood back down the veins.

Minor health risks: Varicose veins are dilated veins which have become incompetent in keeping blood flow in one direction--see pic here. Overtime, they can get quite large. Often, they are more of a cosmetic problem rather than medical. For some, they can cause pain. Clotting/bleeding and secondary infection can occur at the site of trauma. If they are bothersome to you, consult doc. Good luck.

They cannot.: Varicose veins are due to leaking (refluxing) valves of the saphenous system.  They can lead to superficial clots and chronic venous insufficiency but they are not the cause of lethal conditions.  If varicose veins bleed or if clots extend from the varicose veins into the deep venous system, they could theoretically lead to a mortal problem but this would be extremely unusual.

Accepted Answer

No: Varicose veins in a young person may be the result of genetic predisposition, or multiple child birth in a female.  Typically, i see varicose veins in young people as a result of inheritance or something they were born with.  A sedentary life style does not cause varicose veins.
