Genetics, pregnancy,: Varicose veins is caused by genetics, prolonged standing and pregnancy. Exercise, low salt intake, and losing weight help prevent varicose veins.

Many causes: Obesity is a risk factor for development of venous insufficiency , along with heredity, pregnancy, prolonged standing, age, female > male. Exercise is not a risk factor, and in fact is encouraged in the conservative treatment of venous disease.
