Risk of phlebitis: Varicose veins may clot off, a phenomenon which is known as superficial thrombophlebitis. This does have an associated risk of dvt. Venous duplex ultrasound for "reflux" should be obtained, then evlt (or laser tx) may resolve this issue.

No treatment require: Varicose veins are generally a cosmetic issue. If they become symptomatically painful and inflammed they can be treated. But most people just have large swollen veins.

Treat veins?: Many times, varicose veins do not have to be treated. They can cause problems which can be serious but that is certainly not a majority of the time. If your veins bleed, if you have uncontrollable ankle swelling, skin changes, repeated episodes of phlebitis, and/or ulcer formation, then it is time to do something about your veins. Otherwise, pain not controlled by compression is a reason to treat.
