Could Be...: In a child, the typical symptoms of a UTI: Pain, urgency and Frequency are difficult for them to articulate. You should take her to see a Dr, as an untreated UTI could result in kidney infection, or other complications. The Dr can examine the child and do a urinalysis which can easily determine if she has a UTI. If the Urine dip is positive, the Dr can also give you a script for an antibiotic.

UTI in a Child: An infection of the kidney (pyelonephritis) results in severe back pain, high fever and nausea/vomiting.  Unlike an infection only involving the bladder, the ascension of bacteria into the kidney is a dangerous event.  In children it should raise the possibility of an abnormality of the urinary system.  Congenital obstruction or urinary reflux are the most common causes. Surgery may be necessary.

Not a simple answer: Typically with a bladder infection you get more local symptoms like dysuria, hematuria, sensation of needing to go the bathroom often.  With an upper urinary tract infection (kidneys, tract) you may get more systemic symptoms like fever, abd pain, vomiting.  Urinalysis is a quick test (seconds), a urine culture takes 1-2 days.  Abx choice is the same, may need IV if really sick and vomiting.

Unrelated issues: There is no relationship between UTI symptoms and a sore throat.Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is also not a treatment that would cure strep if that were the issue. A simple office quick test can separate the strep  from the viral causes that require no antibiotics.

5 / yr & 1 wont clr: There are multiple parameters for deciding on tubes. One basic mantra "5 in a yr or 1 that won't clear" (in 90  days). An evaluation by an ENT that would do the tubes would give you an idea if your situation would benefit. Some 5yo kids are at the point that their infection frequency is declining & the benefit would be minimal.

what should i need to do about a minor infection from a cut on a 5-year-old?

Soak!: Depends a little on where the cut is--hands and face get worse quickly.  Wash the wound well, soak for about 20 min in clean warm water three or four times a day, and cover in between soaks, perhaps with some Bacitracin ointment.  If worse or not better in a day, see your doctor.  If there is any chance of a thorn or sliver in the wound, go now.

5 year old went to the doc on wednesday.  diagnosed with a viral infection. has had temps of 38.5 and over for 7 days. is this normal with a viral inf?

Sometimes: Many viral infections can last 10-14 days while most pass within a week. Fever at that level is not worrisome but part of natures way to speed healing by increasing circulation of natural healing factors. Fever stuck over 39 for an extended period would suggest a secondary infection. If the kid does not seem to be improving do a re-check.

No: I understand you are a man. You should be proud that you are saving the best for the person in you future that you&#x27;ll love faithfully for a lifetime. If you have a urethral discharge despite being a virgin, the cause may be spices / hot peppers in the diet. If you have a bladder infection with white cells / bacteria in the urine, look for a stone or birth defect. A urologist is your best consult.
