EMG can be helpful: The femoral nerve is formed from L2, L3 and L4 nerves that come out of lumbar spine.

Pain in the thigh can come from lumbar spine even though you may not have back or hip pain. 
EMG can help determine in a peripheral nerve  or lumbar nerve is irritated.

Depends on the cause: There are many potential causes.The sciatic nerve or one of it's branches can be 'pinched' by a herniated disc, stuck vertebra, or piriformis muscle spasm, or even hamstring spasm. Many other causes such as referred pain from SI ligament injury, too.A good history &amp; physical, incl osteopathic hands-on exam may find/fix it. If nerve is inflamed, neuroprolotherapy may help.

on 10mg amytriptoline for nerve pain in my thighs how long does it take to get in your system and give some pain relief?

10mg Amitriptyline: Hello. This is a very low dose. I start patients this low if they are extremely sensitive to meds. Next dose up from 10mg is 25mg. You may just need an additional 15mg in your system to make the difference with your neuropathic thigh pain.In my patient population 10mg-100mg at night has worked the best. Gradual increase to achieve the "correct dose."  We increase every 3 days to a set dose per pt.

: From your description,  it appears that you likely injured the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve of the thigh.  See your doctor, and avoid tight belts and clothes around the waist.  This sensory nerve may or may not recover over the next 3-4 weeks.

Other causes include femoral neuropathy, meralgia paresthetica, and obturator nerve entrapment.  A good exam by your doctor to evaluate for weakness and loss of sensation is recommended.
