Many reasons: Swelling of the eyelids are often related to allergens, trauma, external irritant (something in your eye). Sometimes washing out will help (boric acid solution), icing it to reduce the swelling. If it does not abate soon or worsens, an ophthalmologist is the person to consult.

See an Eye MD: You could be having an allergic reaction to the glue or worse.  You must be seen by an ophthalmologist.  We never recommend eyelash extensions.  In the future consider latisse (bimatoprost).

Stye or chalazion?: These are kind of like folliculitis for the eye-lashes usually caused by bacteria. Start with warm compresses. Don't squeeze it. You can pick up some otc solution or ointment to use. If it's getting worse or not getting better, go see your doc to make sure that that's what it is. Xanthelasmas are cholesterol deposits in the eyelids that are benign and also on the differential.

Several reasons: This is one of those problems where a visit to your doctor is necessary to figure out what's going on.  Only after a thorough evaluation, including examination and possibly labs and other tests, can your doctor correctly diagnose you and treat you effectively.

Warm compresses help: You need to see your eye doctor immediately, if you have a foreign object UNDER your lid, so they can evert your lid, and retrieve the foreign object. If it's a stye or looks like a ball at the edge of your lid, then it's non-emergent and can wait until you get to the eye dr. A warm compress for 10-15 minutes 4 times a day can help decompress it. Not hot, just warm! Be kind to your eye!

Xanthelasma?: Xanthelasma are yellowish plaques on the upper eyelids (usually) and could indicate the risk for a lipid disorder. Sometimes subcutaneous blood from a bruise of the forehead will track to the eyelids and give a yellowish tint.

Infection / allergy: Swelling of the upper eyelid could be from an infected oil gland or skin glan, from a blocked oil gland (stye or chalazion), from allergy, from an insect bite or exposure, and from edema related to lying down. Infections are usually painful, tender and diffuse, while a stye is more like a non-tender lump. Allergy usually is associated with itching. Also, blepharitis is a chronic low grade infection.

Stye: Occluded meibomian (oil) glands along the edges of the lid can get stopped up and cause a bump or swelling along the lid margin.  Other causes can be papilloma (wart), skin tumors, or even irregular skin growth.  See an ophthalmologist to see if it is prudent to remove it.

Chalazion: A circumscribed usually non tender swelling in the upper eyelid is Chalazion. It is a cyst that usually reduces in size over time though may not completely disappear. If symptomatic, an ophthalmologist can remove it under local anesthesia. More diffuse and painful swelling needs examination by your family physician.
