i am experiencing upper abdominal pain during my period. i have never gotten these before and rarely experience cramping during period. ?

Options: There are multiple options for painful periods. Hormonal treatments such as birth control pills, Progesterone treatments and the Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud are effective treatments that will help many people. There is also a drug called Lysteda that contains no hormones which will help others.

Acid: Because food will relieve the pain from stomach acid, food will help both pain from reflux of acid into the esophagus as well as pain from ulcer.  The pain will reoccur however, usually 15 - 20 minutes after eating.  You should report your symptoms to your doctor.

: If you suffer epigastric pain, constant or episodic, contact your physician.  A gastroenterologist may well be needed to confirm or rule out this diagnosis.  Response to massage is essentially meaningless, and does not exclude an ulcer.

Depends: If any of the following are true you should go to the ER tonight: nausea, vomiting, inability to tolerate any food, fever, chills, pain so severe that you can't sleep. Here's one test you can do at home: if you hop in place and the pain is really severe when you do that, or you are limited by pain, then go to the ER as well, that could be what is known as peritonitis and may require surgery.

Potential Side effects w emergency contraception: tender breasts; menstrual flow changes (spotting, bleeding, early or late period); loose stools; dizziness; headache; nausea/ vomiting; abdominal pain / cramping or fatigue. For severe or on-going pain - consult with your gynecologist. Take care.

Very likely you are: Experiencing gastroesophageal reflux disease.  This problem will definitely cause the symptoms you describe.  You should avoid alcohol, coffee and tea (including decaf), and highly seasoned foods.  Lists of foods to avoid are available in the internet.  Then you should be taking one off the many medicines that decrease stomach acid, ranitidine (Zantac), famotidine (Pepcid), pantoprazole (Protonix)
