Sedation: It contains 25 mg of diphenhydramine. This is also known as benadryl. It should make you sedated and help you sleep. It can occasionally have a hangover effect in the morning. If that happens certainly do not drive or operate machinery until it wears off. Best wishes.

Paradoxical effects: Can occur, that is, restlessness and difficulty falling and staying asleep.  I believe the active substance is Diphenhydramine  which isn't a long term solution.  I recommend  that if you have a long term persistent sleep disorder, that you get seen and assessed by a specialist instead of otc medications etc.

Benadryl, (diphenhydramine)Unisom,Pamp: I understand your concern.
Both Benadryl and unisom have ingredient of diphenhydramine, the combined effect of which can cause drowsiness, depression confusion and delirium, depending upon the dose and duration. 
One ingredient of pamprin is acetaminophen, unisom pm also has Acetaminophen in it, combined effect of these two can cause liver disease. Please see your physician for your sleep problem.

: Unisom gel caps contain Diphenhydramine (also known as benadryl) Normal dose is 25-50mg. Increased doses carry the risk of respiratory suppression and anticholinergic effects. This is seen typically above 300mg. Watch for: dizziness, confusion, low blood pressure, rapid heart rate and inability to urinate. Seek medical care if you experience any symptoms, and avoid large doses in the future.

Yes: Good for short term, but can create both psychological dependence and anxiety if not used, no sleep will occur.  
Try sleep hygiene: no caffeine after 5pm, dark comfortable bedroom, used only for sex or sleep. To bed and arise same time daily. 
Try using the tabs only if you fail to fall asleep in 15-30 minutes

For short-term use: Both of these drugs are prescribed to treat insomnia, and both warn to take at lowest dose for shortest time needed.  Long-term use increases risk of dependency and raising dosages increases risk of side effects.  Both warn that you must taper dose to discontinue after long term use, or risk serious side effects.  Consider CBT psychotherapy for insomnia,  more effective than relying on a pill!

Similar, minor diffe: The long term side effects are numerous depending on the individuals, duration, and dose.  Major ones: Osteoporosis, cataract, diabetes, hypertension, adrenal suppression (stop working altogether) . Some may have glaucoma. Weight gain at the belly and face, acne etc. Some immune suppression can be expect with high doses for months.
Prednisone has less sodium-retention effects (less low potassium)

OVERDOSING: It is an antihistamine used for sleep by some people and promoted for that.But taking 30 pills is very dangerous and you hould be aware it can cause
seizureshallucinations, fatal rhabdomyolysis and acute renal failure and death.

Yo-yo effect: Unisom is actually a brand of diphenhydramine ( Benadryl ) . Phentermine is a stimulating amphetamine. The 2 taken in close proximity will certainly cause a sleep disturbance....try flooding your body with 8-10 glasses of electrolyte fluids in 24 hrs.
