Overdue: Usually babies who are overdue (40-41 weeks) are usually born without vernix and do have wrinkly skin.

Bath better: A good wipe down also works but a bath gets water everywhere so best to bathe baby.

Unlikely: I couldn't think of any reason it would.This vernix, is composed of dead skin cells,hair and other debris from the sterile environment that surrounds baby.Many cosmetic firms use the material(obtained from cattle) as a collagen basis for cold cream. For this basic collagen (skin protein) to aid to the digestive system doesn't pass my BS filter.

hi, my son 40 days old failed oae test but seems to respond to sounds at home. the technician told that it could be due to vernix in the ear. could you please guide us?

: The OAE test is a good screening test, but an abnormal result should be confirmed with additional testing by Audiology.  Vernix in the ear is one possible cause, but infection is another particularly during the first few months of life. It is a good indication though if the baby is turning to sound at home, and most likely everything is fine. Watch for an signs of infection, e.g. fever.

Kids seldom need rpr: Loose belly muscles help a developing baby by allowing easy blood flow thru the umbilical cord ; into babies body. After birth, that loosness may allow a transient umbilical hernia that will usually disappear when the belly muscles tighten, starting after baby learns to sit.By 2yo most uh have receded. I find girls more likely to need repair than boys ? Reason.I rarely refer for repair.

Go see your surgeon: Any hernia that becomes painful suggests incarceration and/or strangulation. Regardless, painful hernias need to be evaluated by a surgeon as soon as possible  for urgent/emergent repair.

Have baby checked: Most of the time, umbilical cord stump dries up and falls off by 2-3 weeks of age.  If the stump remain hanging by a thin string, often is the case, primary care doctor can easily detach the stump.  If the stump remain wet and intact, drying it up by exposing on air and frequent application of alcohol can be of help. Delayed cord separation due to lazy leukocyte syndrome is very rare.

2 weeks: Your baby's umbilical cord will fall off on its own when he's around 10-14 days old.  There's nothing you need to do to it before it falls off except keep it dry.  So sponge baths only while it's still attached and you can finally get him in the bath after it falls off.

Blood vessels: There are two arteries-carting oxygenated blood from the placenta and one umbilical vein that carries de-oxygenated blood back to the placenta. The vein is blue and the arteries are reddish in color.
