Dr. Alvin Lin answered

Go see your surgeon: Any hernia that becomes painful suggests incarceration and/or strangulation. Regardless, painful hernias need to be evaluated by a surgeon as soon as possible for urgent/emergent repair.

Painful?: Very unusual for an umbilical hernia to cause any trouble at all (except cosmetic, ) but i suppose if an adult still has one (it usually goes away by age 6) it can be repaired surgically.
