Images of the body: Ultrasound, ct, and MRI are three different types of imaging procedures which allow the radiologist see what's going on in your body.  Each modality has it's own strengths, weaknesses, and indications.  The best use of each is guided by the radiologist.  The radiologist interprets at the images and provides a report to your doctor.

No. Just different.: The various scanning methods:  mri, ct, and ultrasound, are different... Not better than one another. So, one has to know what is being looked at and looked for. That's why the expertise of the primary doctor and the radiologist is so important. Together, they can decide which method and which machine is best for looking for a particular problem or disease.

Yes: Mostly in staging. Some are better for different organs and sometimes are duplicated for clarification.

Nothing if obese: Fatty liver or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (nafld or steatohepatosis) can be diagnosed via ultrasound in overweight or obese patient. Solution is to eat right, exercise regularly, and lose weight, after which fatty liver resolves. No additional imaging is required, although either ct or MRI can be used to look for other causes. However, it's important to draw blood looking for infection.

Yes,: but sometimes the findings are not specific, and biopsy may be required if there is a question.

what to do if i have a uterine fibroid that shows up on both an mri and ct scan, but are not showing up on ultrasounds. why?

Accepted Answer

Fibroid: Have your doctor or the radiologist compare all 3 scans and figure out what is going on.  The pelvic MRI is probably most reliable in this situation.  Sometimes if a fibroid is connected by only a narrow pedicle to the uterus, and it extends away from the uterus, it may be obscured on ultrasound by interposed bowel gas.

Why worry: In answer to your question, i don't believe an MRI has any advantage over ct for pancreas lesions.  You've had a normal u/s and a normal ct, so why are you concerned about a process that is rarely seen in folks your age? If a lesion is seen on ct, the best test for evaluation is an endoscopic ultrasound with biopsy.  Don't waste your life worried about what could develop.. Good luck.

CT, ERCP, MRCP: Thin-slice (3 mm) ct abdomen yields fine detail of pancreatic structures...  Blood tests including tumor markers: ca-19-9, ca-15-3, and CEA can alert the clinician for ca.  Also, ERCP w/ ductal brushings (though its endoscopy) can search for malignancy.  Finally, mrcp may add to the clinical picture, but 64-bit ct is slowly encroaching on the former's superiority.

Not abnormal: It is not abnormal, as even with all the technology we have in the field of medicine, we can not always find a definitive cause for a persons pain, in your case neuropathy.  I assume diabetes, a post herpetic neuralgia case, nerve impingement syndromes, lymes disease, ricketsial infections, etc were all ruled out. See a neurologist if you have not already. Best wishes.

i have had this up back pain accompained by right flank gnawing/burning type pain for one year. all ct and mri and ultrasound ok. i am ana + 1:640. ?

Not ANA related!: This positive test is only confusing you.  There are more causes for soft tissue back pain that cannot be seen by imaging! clearly, an ANA associated disease would not cause your problems.  I would see a pmr doc, or a rheumatologist, although many are not as familiar with soft tissue back issues, as a physiatrist!
