See below: Opinions may vary, but most nephrologists agree that home dialysis which includes home hemo dialysis [ where you perform your own dialysis at home ]  and peritoneal dialysis [stomach dialysis, blood free dialysis] are better options than incenter hemodialysis where you go for dialysis to a center 3 times a week. There are some considerations whereby home dialysis may not be a proper option.

PD: As far as i know there is only one type of peritoneal dialysis.  However it is personalized for each patient. There are several different catheters that can be used and the fluid used in the dialysis can be different based on a patient's membrane transport type and residual renal function.

PD cath: A peritoneal catheter is introduced in the lower abdomen to allow for introduction of fluids in and out.

93% survive 2 years: Based on data from United States Renal Data System (http://www.usrds.org) for 2010-2012 there is a 6.7% 2 year mortality after starting home peritoneal dialysis ( 9.9%  2 year mortality for home hemodilaysis).  This compares to   2 year mortality of 12.3 % for in center hemodialysis.  
It should be emphasized that mortality after kidney transplant at 2 years is only 1.8%.  Diabetes increases risk.

Here are some...: On average, some 20-22% of dialyzed patients will die in a year, every year; so, it is not easy for them to live &gt;5 years. But, regardless of what you may suffer, lifestyle + good medical advice + possibility for kidney transplant give you the best possible hope to live longer. Nonetheless, do something within your control now and don't waste time &amp; energy to think and worry about what beyond...

: 2 ways to do dialysis - peritoneal dialysis (usually done at home, every night) and hemodialysis (usually done in a dialysis center and usually 3 times a week). With peritoneal dialysis you do not need a center to go to, so you can say you are more independent. On hemodialysis usually people make arrangements ahead of time if they need to travel, in order to go to a different center temporarily.

Complex: The potassium elevation likely due to the renal failure being treated by dialysis.  For specific advice talk to her treating doctors. Dialysis does not replace kidneys all that well but does prolong life for awhile.

is it ethical/legal for blood banks to cite fictional patient cases in an attempt to get donations? ie, "a dialysis patient needs your blood type..."

Probably not, but...: How do you know they are fictional?  I don't think any false advertisement is ethical, but there is definitely a need for blood donors for everyone from cancer patients to dialysis patients to trauma patients. So thanks for donating!
