my 10 months baby has conjunctivitis. does she need to see a doc?

Accepted Answer

Yes: Your (her) doc can help determine if conjunctivitis (if that's what it is) is due to allergies or bacterial vs viral infection and thus prescribe appropriate treatment. Or perhaps pink/red eye is due to some other condition that requires referral to ophthalmologist for specialized care.

what medication do i treat conjunctivitis with? i do not know the cause (allergy/virus, etc). seeing a doctor is not an option.

Better see doctor: If it is only pink eye  and only watery discharge then it may be due to allergy   or virus.But if there is greenish yellow discharge from eyes  ,that means infection . Either way  better see the doctor who can decide what do you have and what medicine you need .

my daughter has had conjunctivitis for 5 days. i've been bathing it 3 times a day. but her eyes are still bloodshot is it worth seeing her gp.

Definitely see an MD: Have her see a pediatrician asap.  Eye infections in children are often bacterial and can be easily treated.  In some cases there may be complications if not promptly treated as well.  If a referral to a specialist is needed, the pediatrician will let you know.

if you had conjunctivitis and your eye looks and feels normal but you see blurry for 3 days does that mean glasses?

Wait a while: Conjnunctivitis can temporarily change the vision.  Wait until it is clearly all over and the eye is normal.  Then you c an be measured to see if you need glasses.

hi. i suspect i have giant papiliary conjunctivitis as per what my optometrist has said. do i need to see a gp or an ophthalmologist? i wear contact lenses but have taken them out for now. thanks

See ophthalmologist: Optometrists are fine for routine eyeglasses and contact lenses.  But with a medical problem, an ophthalmologist is the better choice and GPC needs proper treatment.

No OTC meds: The treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis, if that truly is the cause,  will require prescription meds. Otc eve drops can often provide comfort to those with viral, irritant & allergic causes of conjunctival irritation, but they will not cure a true bacterial disease. Call in & see what the kids doc suggests.

my eyes are watery. i see some oily substances on my iris (inside tear film) and they move up when i blink. sometime it was uncomfortable and i needed to wash my eyes to clear it up but it come back shortly. is this viral conjunctivitis?

: Usually with any type of conjunctivitis, including viral, allergic or bacterial, the eye would also be red. The only way to know what is wrong is for a doctor to look at it. You should call your doctor or do a video consult on HealthTap. An in-person eval may be necessary if it is difficult to see on video. Artificial tears may be helpful-1 drop 3-4x daily. If it doesn’t clear up, see your doctor.

Allergic?: Allergic conjunctivitis is not contagious - avoid the allergen and use an antihistamine.  

How do you know you have allergic conjunctivitis ?  If you have not seen your doctor you should.

Ophthalmologist: See an ophthalmologist ASAP.  Without examining this there is no way in which to predict what it might be, but your eyesight is precious and can be damaged permanently if not treated rapidly. Go now and see an expert.  Best wishes.

my newborn has a gunky eye. the gp took a swab to see if it's conjunctivitis or blocked tear duct, if conjunctivitis can that cause blindness?

Unlikely: You have done the right thing by having your child's eye looked at.  You can keep it clean with use of warm washcloths until the results come in.  Conjunctivitis is an infection of the outside lining of the eye - occasionally bacterial and sometimes viral.  Blindness is remotely possible but very rare except with infections that occur during birth now routinely prevented.  Your baby should do well
