OTC medicine: No antihistamines, decongestants, or cough medicines are recommended for infants. They have an increased chance of side effects from these medicines. Try saline nasal drops

According : According to drugs.Com, there are no interactions listed for these two medications.  However, i would not recommend the use of Zicam nasal gel for a cold.  It has been implicated in causing the loss of the sense of smell and the fda pulled it from store shelves in 2009.

Accepted Answer

Pain reliever: As a pain reliever, it may help with the pain of an ear ache. However, the pain is likely to return as the medicine wears off, so be prepared to medicate multiple times. See your doctor so the child can get started on appropriate medicine if indicated after the offending ear is examined.

There : There isn't enough information to truly answer your question.  But anytime a child has abdominal pain with fever, you have to rule out appendicitis which is a very serious condition that one my die from.  I would take to your local doctor right away to be seen.

No: Over the counter cold medications have no proven benefit in well controlled studies, and can cause serious problems, especially in children.  In fact, it is now finally recognized generally that taking these meds in kids under 2 is a very bad idea (although deaths in infants from them have been reported for 30 years). Not recommended: Children's cold medication not recommended for the under 6 yo crowd.  Instead give honey 1 tsp every 4 -6 hours for cough.

: Safe/maybe/recommended=no. Studies in the US have shown these products have little to offer kids under 6 and have been discouraged for more than a decade. At most they give you something to do, at worst, the kid decides to self medicate later &amp; ends up in the ER with an overdose, which is why they quit recommending it.

is it okay to give a 1.5 year old triaminic? what is good for a persistent cough likely from allergies?

Accepted Answer

It depends: Children's Triaminic products can  be given to a child of 18 months but only those with acetaminophen/dextromethorphan. Children's Triaminic products with pseudoephedrine (decongestant) or chlorpheniramine(antihistamine) should not be given to children under six years. If allergies are thought to be present than you need an antihistamine like cetirizine  for children. Check with your pediatrician.

Yes: Yes he/she can. There is no conflict between those two medicines.
