how do you differentate between purple toe syndrome versus a bruised toe?

: I would take a history to see if the toe was bruised or not and if you are taking Warfarin.   Bruise is usually only one or two and PRS will be more.  Google both and look at images. See what you think.  As you will note there are several different PTS causes.   Take pictures and review what had been going on before you noted them.   Share with us and your Dr.

good morning doctors. my send toe, next to the big toe is purple. the er dr said it was a bruise. how would i know if it is a bruise or purple toe syndrome? yesterday toe was warm. next day it feels cool?

: Purple toe syndrome is caused by a small clot in the vessels leading to your toe. The discoloration indicates reduced blood flow. To Test whether the cause is reduced blood flow, sit on a step with both feet clearly visible, press gently on the nail of both second toes then let go. Both nails should go from white to pink in the same amount of time. If a clot, the purple nail will be slower.

what causes would make one leg swell and have hot spots in lower leg areas not the entire lower leg? do have narrowing at botrom,but no doctors have offered any treatment. toes turn,red,purple, and black in any weather temperature ,raynauds ruled out?

: It is not feasible to provide a meaningful opinion without additional history, physical examination and may be some tests. What you described suggests venous thrombosis. It would be prudent to see a doctor. Wish you good health!

bitten by leech while in river, top of foot over arch. 1 week later top of foot large red, swollen area. itchy, dark purple spot at bite. treatment?

Leech Bite?: It is actually rare to be allergic or to have a reaction to a leech bite.  Assuming it was a leech bite, you could have some irritation and itching, but normally should have no further problems if you have good health and no leech allergies. However, if you are experiencing symptoms such as you describe, then you need to seek medical attention as it may be infected.

pain started in both feet, same time, tendon bottom center and sides of ankles. was diagnosed with flat foot syndrome. treatment not helping. now pain(burning) in both knees started, front center length of knees when i bend them. any pointers wl help?

Go to urgent care/ER: You risk  having a clot and/or infection with the toe turning purple/black; possibly gangrene.  You may have cut a blood vessel.  Go get checked!

what are treatment options for hammer toes?

Accepted Answer

Live with it or fix: Hammertoes are a structural problem that is inherited.  If they're not causing you pain, don't do anything.  If they are causing you pain, you have to decide whether the pain is bad enough to warrant surgery, because surgery is the only way to fix a hammertoe.  The surgery isn't all that bad, actually, but it makes no sense to have surgery unless you have pain.

Yes: I am concerned with things on my or my children's bodies that are not right. A purple toe is not right. This is likely a vascular problem. First check closely for any hair that may be strangulating the toe. If it is there remove the hair. If no hair is this toe colder than the others? Is it warmer? Take your findings to your pediatrician and haven him/her find the cause.

Most likely: If there is no pain or itching, this will likely subside in the next 2-3 wks . Aside from impeding your walking, I see no imminent health danger.

what to do if i banged my toe hard and the nail has gone purple..?

No worries: Happened to me 8 months ago. The nail is attached to the nail bed. When injury occurs, the union between the two gets disrupted and bleeding occurs under the nail. Eventually it will fall off and a new nail will grow in. this process takes about 8-10 months. Mine is almost grown back. No pain....no worries. If it gets red, swollen or hurts, see a Podiatrist.
