Possibly: Melanosis coli is a harmless brown discoloration of the inside of the colon.  It is typically caused by laxative medications containing chemicals called "anthraquinones", which are also used to make dyes.  Rifampin is not an anthraquinone, but it causes orange-colored urine, tears and stool.  I assume it could cause a similar orange discoloration of the colon.

Yes: Although pathology textbooks focus on cascara laxatives as the cause of blackening of the colon mucosa by pigment in macrophages, the truth is that any laxative that works by damaging the colonic epithelium can do the same thing.

i just had a colonoscopy this morning and they found melanosis coli.  i look up =abusive use with laxatives.i do not use laxatives. what else causes?

Melanosis coli: If the diagnosis is correct is caused by cascara segrada an ingredient in many over the counter laxatives, softeners and herbal remedies. It causes deposits of pigment in the mucosal cells giving a black or leopard skin appearance to the colon lining instead of the natural pink appearance, it does not pose any medical risk but it does make diagnosis of colon pathology somewhat difficult.

Melanosis coli: Melanosis coli is a completely benign condition seen on colonoscopy (the inside of the colon has dark brown or even black markings). It's most often seen in people who take laxatives on a long-term or chronic basis. The melanosis coli is not a problem in and of itself--but it tells the doctor you have had constipation for a long time which can lead to other problems, like diverticulosis.

Confusing Constipati:  Most  think it is "normal" to have one bowel movement a day, the actual range of normal bowel movements is quite  large, its normal to have anywhere from as many as three bowel movements a day to as little as three bowel movements a week. Constipation is hard, dry, lumpy stool that is difficult or painful to pass and which may be accompanied by bloating and discomfort. M.Coli from laxative abuse.

If you are correct, and  these spots are benign lentigos, topical treatments include hydroquinone, azelaic acid, corticosteroids, and tretinoin. Laser surgery can provide definitive treatment. Melanosis Coli: I think you are referring to melanosis coli. This is a discoloration of the inner lining of the colon, which is not cancerous, but can make it difficult to notice irregularities.
