has thalassemia trait,blood test ferritin result 12ug/l  range 12.00-250 ug/l 
gp says ferritin isnt low it is normal just 2 standard deviations from the mean.
no need for iron treatment.
my dermatalogist disagrees?

Yes: Hematologists (blood specialists) evaluate persons with both sickle cell trait and Alpha thalassemia disease. The sickling should not be a problem, because the person is only sickle trait, and Alpha thal. Mutations seem to lessen the tendency of blood cells to sickle from the sickle cell mutation. Persons with both sickle trait and Alpha thal. Trait probably won't have symptoms needing treatment.

: "Thalassemia trait" may be associated with mild anemia (tired, weakness, shortness of breath with exercise), and depends on the type of hemoglobin inherited from one parent.  Iron stores should be monitored, as opportunities for red cell production can reduce symptoms, but vigorous iron treatment without utilization of the iron can also cause clinical problems.

Can not: It is a genetic condition, which can declare itself as anemia. Carriers may have had inborn protection from malaria. You should learn as much as possible about your condition and it's inheritance. Your doc may refer you to a hematologist if your condition is severe.

Only if sickle gene: If a person has beta thalassemia trait, but does not also have the sickle cell mutation, then he will not have hemoglobin s. If he has both sickle trait and beta thalassemia trait, then he will have hemoglobin s (the majority of his hemoglobin is s, so he will have sickle cell disease symptoms).
