Needless : Needless to say, now that you have your MRI report, your questions are really best answered by your doctor.

So that you are properly armed with information, in general terms, you have several places where the bone has been injured, but not fractured around your ankle and foot.  More significantly, you have a torn ligament on the outside (lateral) part of your ankle.  The anterior talo-fibular ligament is the most frequently injured ligament in an ankle injury.  According to the mri, this is a full thickness tear, or rather a complete tear, not just a few fibers.  You also have some partial tears of other ligaments.

So, in short, you have a pretty significant soft tissue injury to your ankle.  No fractures, however.  Depending on your age and level of activity, there is a good chance you'll require surgery to repair at least one of those torn ligaments.  And, since ligaments receive less blood than bone, they take longer to heal, so you'll probably be in a cast, off-weight bearing, for a couple of months, and also have a course of physical therapy.

Get active!: Your MRI from 4 months ago identified potential irriation and injury to the tendon.  Now,  4 months later,  it sounds as if the pain is improving, with less swelling.  This is the typical pattern of resolution of soft tissue sprains.  You might consider gentle therapy so you can slowly return back to you pre-injury state.  You may also consider using an ankle support brace with vigorous activity.

To prevent injury, you need a rehabilitation program to make you tendon stronger. If it gets repeteadly injured, and without rehabilitation, you risk developing chronic pain and weakness.

Keep the area clean: Wash with warm water and soap.  Keep the area clean.  If uncomfortable, may give an appropriate dose of Tylenol (acetaminophen).  You will want to consult with a pediatrician for the correct dose as the child is under 2.

Why do you have it?: Is it unilateral or bilateral.  Is it something that worsens during the day.  Do you have a heart or kidney ailment.  I need more info to help you. Can be bad veins and many other things.

Elevate: Reduce salt, and elevate your legs whenever you can. Support hose might help as well. If no improvement, you should see a doctor to find out what is causing the swelling.
