Elevate: Reduce salt, and elevate your legs whenever you can. Support hose might help as well. If no improvement, you should see a doctor to find out what is causing the swelling.

However ankle swelling can be a symptom of arthritis particularly if associated with pain. Too much fluid in your body secondary to decreased kidney function is a possible cause. Varicose veins can cause swelling. The reasons are multiple so before treatment try to find out the cause.
