Lump: A new lump in your neck with your history of lymph nodes and thyroidectomy needs you to go back to your doctor and/or surgeon as quickly as possible.

Size and features: It depends upon the size and pathologic features of the tumor. Small noninvasive papillary cancers may not benefit from use of radioiodine. Check w/your endocrinologist.

Need to clarify: I'm wondering why the hemithyroidectomy was performed in the first place, if not on suspicion of malignancy. The best treatment now will depend upon the pathologist's exact details of the little cancer. Perhaps doing nothing might be the best option, or going back to remove some lymph nodes. You may be asked your own preference in dealing with this cancer, which is less dangerous than most.

Do it: This is routine after surgery for certain types and stages of thyroid cancer, is standard of care, has contributed to the fairly high cure rate even when these are quite aggressive, and if this was recommended to you by scientific physicians, you should do this without fear that there is anything they are not telling you.

It depends.: It depends on the size of the tumor. Most surgeons agree that total thyroidectomy is preferable, although there are dissenters. This allows treatment with radioactive iodine and gives us the ability to follow a marker in the blood, thyroglobulin. For very small tumors, observation alone is an option.

i have graves disease. i had partial thyroidectomy after thyroid toxycosis 2003. got hyperthyroid again. this time went for radioactive iodine treatment. still hyper but picked up 20+kg without changing diet. ?

You may be: low on thyroid (hypothyroid) now, after the radioactive treatment which likely suppressed your thyroid function maximally. i've had total thyroidectomy & neck dissection & 2 rai treatments, ultrasound found tissue in thyroid bed, what does this mean?

Uncertain: The only way to tell what the tissue in the thyroid bed is would be to do a needle biopsy. There could be scar tissue. There could be recurrent tumor. If the thyroid tumor picked up rai then a nuclear scan could show  if there is recurrent tumor corresponding to the ultrasound findings. Talk with your oncologist.

Needs biopsy: If there is a 2cm growth in your neck or thyroid area, it needs to be biopsied to prove that it is not thyroid cancer, or some other kind of growth.  Hopefully not.

Yes: Dequervain's thyroiditis can make you hyperthyroid for a few days or weeks then self-cure. Another cause is eating beef into which the animal's thyroid was accidentaly placed by the butcher.

Yes: After total thyroid removal, has to take life long thyroid supplement synthetic thyroid hormone.
