IN an adult with : Your symptoms, you may well be getting poor sleep because of sleep apnea which has a strong association with depression (20% of people with sleep apnea have depression), night-time urination caused by atrial natriuretic peptide being released from your heart), and diabetes. I would recommend seeing your family doctor for a referral to a sleep clinic for an overnight polysomnogram. Best wishes.

i have cfs/fm.  i am taking 40 mg. prozac (fluoxetine) daily, 12.5-15mg. trazodone  before bed and 0.5 mg ativan usually 2-3 daily. can i take flexeril with these?

Could/should?: The issue here is whether benefits outweigh risk of increased sedation and feeling even less willing to exercise/move/stretch/live and be active.
Any therapy for this complicated and frustrating disease needs to follow a very patient based, individualized approach.

Trazadone: can be used long term. Flexeril can be used short term. (the latter can cause cognitive impairment and depression) 
Both can be used together (I usually limit this to 3 weeks) Other antispasmodics can be used long term (Norflex, Robaxin, (methocarbamol) Skelaxin) without major issues

for sleep aid, patient with severe insomnia  you dr. had to choose between prescribing amitriptyline or trazadone or flexeril, (cyclobenzaprine hcl) which one would you choose? and how would you monitor it?

Variable: I use trazodone frequently for insomnia since it is scored two different ways on the tablet. It gives a variety of doses to try from a 150 mg dose. In other words, you can try 50-75-100-125-1150 mg at bedtime for a sleep aid. Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine hcl) is also a reasonable attempt at sleep aid. I monitor by early morning feelings more than anything.

Concern: Flexeril when take with Trazadone will increase Seratonin levels significantly. Probably best no to take at all.

Over sedation: Flexeril (cyclobenzaprine hcl) works as a muscle relaxer mainly by sedation, when other sedating medications are taken as well there can be unpredictable results. More sedation but no more muscle relief. So  generally we avoid those  combos.

: I see no problems with interactions between those 2 meds, but check with your pharmacist,who has access to much information, to be sure.

Mix well: They can both be taken together.

what is flexeril versus skelaxin (metaxalone)?

Accepted Answer

See below: Both are muscle relaxers.  Both have the same adverse effects.  My experience is that skelaxin (metaxalone) is less sedating than flexeril.
