Several: Placental location, placental depth of penetration into the wall with certain abnormal conditions.  Where and how the cord inserts in the placenta can be important at times.  With twins or multiples gestations, there are a number of important factors looked for by ultrasound, including blood vessel communication and comparison of sizes.  Nmber of  blood vessels in the umbilical cord can also value.

Possibly: Appendicitis can be diagnosed by ultrasound in some patients.  It is being used more and more in children to avoid radiation exposure.  However, much of it is dependent on the skill of the technician and the comfort level of the radiologist.  It's useful, but probably not yet as good as CT scanning. Of course, history and exam are absolutely the most important elements.

Not great: Pancreatic detail is limited on abdominal ultrasound.  The pancreas is often obscured by overlying bowel or other structures because of its location deep in the abdomen.

Anatomy: Generally thyroid ultrasound studies look for anatomic abnormalities such as size and nodules.

Normal: That means baby looked normal with a prior study that looked normal, too and within the limits of the study.

Couple thoughts...: Monthly cyclical pain sounds like it is tied to your menstrual cycles and gynecological disorders that could do that include endometriosis.  Gi disorders that cause rlq pain include crohn's disease.  You should see both a ob/gyn and GI specialist for a work-up.  Good luck!

See your doctor: Fatty liver changes can be a cause for abnormal liver function tests (alt, ast and others). Fatty liver changes can be due to obesity, medications, toxins, etc. It is an important medical problem that should be addressed.

i have mild pain on the top of my right testicle but no lumps, or abnormalities from ultrasound results. this has been happening for 2 months. answer?

Orhalgia: Scrotal pain can be from many things. If the epididymi (above and below testes) are tender to touch,  likely epididymitis.  If nothing in scrotum is tender, likely varicocele.  Also may be a hernia.  See a urologist for examination  and diagnosis.

i recently had an ultrasound of the gallbladder which had no gallstones or abnormalities , would it still be necessary to do a hida scan?

Accepted Answer

Possibly: A normal gallbladder ultrasound, while good news, doesn't exclude certain syndromes of gallbladder dysfunction that can cause pain. A hida scan, when combined with cholecystokinin, is useful in that this test shows how well the gallbladder empties itself of bile and whether the giving of  cholecystokinin (which causes gallbladder contraction) reproduces your pain.
