Depends. : Common problems related to vaginal mesh implants and slings include pelvic pain, painful intercourse, difficulty urinating, pain with bowel movements and mesh erosion.  The most effective treatment for these types of problems is removal of the implant. Mesh removal surgery is very effective and safe with a surgeon experienced in these type of procedures.

No: The "slings" used for treatment of urinary incontinence have not been implicated in the recent fda warning issued in 2011.  Although they are also made of polypropylene mesh, the amount of material and the anatomic location of the sling are totally different from the mesh kits that were referred to in the fda warning bulletin.  In addition, there is plenty of data published documenting the safety.

Porcine tissue graft: Porcine grafty is natural and will not erode but there is a higher rate of reoccurence of the problem fore which it is placed  as it is natural tissue and not permanent mesh.

i have had two bouts of sigmoiditis. can the transvaginal mesh cause this? i feel like the mesh is poking me. i had two colonoscops. four months apart

Unlikely: Sigmoiditis is either due to inflammatory, iscjemic or infectious in nature. It sounds like you are being followed appropriately for that . Transvaginal mesh has nothing to do with it. If you have any issues with the mesh i would recommend checking with your surgeon and making sure its in the right place.

Weigh benefits: This procedure can be very beneficial but can sometimes lead to serious complications. You need to consider how bad your symptoms are now and how much they interfere with your life and weigh that against the possibility of complications.

i had a transvaginal mesh sling put in about 10 years ago for stress incont., and it worked well. however, it hasn't been effective in preventing leakage for the past few years. is this because it is only a temporary solution that has to be repeated?

: Transvaginal mesh can lose effectiveness for treatment of stress urinary incontinence, and in some cases, may not still support the bladder/urethral junction, and/or increased weight may cause increased suprapubic pressure, and leakage will occur.  See a urologist or pelvic reconstruction gyn  to assess the need for surgical revision .

Removal of mesh: The vast majority of patients who develop problems with transvaginal mesh can have resolution of their symptoms by removing the part of the mesh that is causing problems.  Most of the time bladder symptoms related to the mesh can be relieved.  Issues relating to vaginal pain or painful intercourse may be more challenging but the majority of these can also be fixed by judicious removal of the mesh

i had transvaginal mesh put in due to leakage. i have had severe on going pain ever since in my hip and colon . is this a side effect.

Urogyn evaluation: Consider scheduling a visit with a Urogynecologist. They will need to know what exactly surgery you had before, what type of mesh, how extensive the surgery was and other details. They maywant to see the Operative reports from your surgery. Then they will likely want to do a complete history and physical. Only then could one determine if a relationship exists between your pain and previous surgery

Revision: Although not very common, we have seen some complications related to permanent grafts or mesh used for vaginal repairs and urethral slings. Painful sex is not normal and if it has been more than occasional, should be evaluated by your gyn surgeon or another one with experience in vaginal repair and grafts.
