Usually nothing: I assume this is found on an ultrasound or ct report.  It is often normal, especially in women, but must be interpreted in the context of the whole study.

The doctor who ordered the test would be in the best position to judge.

Abscess: The only things that live in the male pelvis are: 1) bladder and 2) rectum.  There should be no fluid collection outside of the bladder (normal), but with gas in it, usually represents an abscess.   This usually represents a perforation or fistula from the rectum, or post-operative leak after rectal surgery.  Depending on the cause, the treatment can be drainage through the rectum or open surgery

Many reasons: There are several ways yes.  Diverticulitis (little sac out-pouchings in the colon) can rupture and lead to this.  Irritation anywhere in the pelvis can lead to fluid and or abscess.  The list does go on.  These things can resolve spontaneously...but do sometimes require CT guided or US guided drainage.

Depends reason 4test: How concerning the finding of increased fluid report on a test result depends on the reason the test was ordered.  Reported but unrelated  finding may not causing any problem. Too often we order a test for one problem, do not find anything bad, and then need to explain the note of an unusual finding that is completely not a problem. I certainly cannot say if it is a problem for him.

Sounds like a cyst: Without seeing the entire report and images we can not interpret the results. It sounds like they are describing a very small 2 centimeter ovarian cyst which is typically a benign finding. A trace amount of free fluid is generally a normal finding. Contact the ordering physician who can interpret it in the proper clinical context

It likely means: nothing significant. If you were treated with agressive fluid replacement, some of the fluid could "leak" into other body spaces due to hydrostatic and osmotic gradients.

Accepted Answer

: The ultrasound report identifies a mass consistent with either a fibroid tumor or a polyp  (benign "neoplasms") which may be the reason the ultrasound was ordered, as both may cause bleeding between menstrual events.  See your GYN physician who ordered the ultrasound for guidance.  "Free fluid" in the abdominal cavity is a frequent and essentially normal finding.

is new free fluid & tiny calcification in pelvis of 58 yr male bad? (he had gastrectomy last year to remove gist tumor, but recent ct shows no tumor)

Gist tumor: Calcification is usually related to old scar tissue that becomes visible on xray.  Many thing can cause a little bit of fluid in the pelvis. It's very stressful when you get scans and things look good but there are new findings. Many times the new stuff was there on prior scans but was too small or just not sliced thur by the scanner...the slices on a CT can be several mm apart.   Hang in there!

what dr to see. several scattered retroperitoneal lymph nodes. trace free fluid lower pelvis. several colonic diverticula. 3 weeks since my ct scan and gastro had not called me back. upper right pain in abdomen?

: How did you get your CT scan results? Didn't the ordering MD or gastroenterologist notify you of them?  If not, call them. Right upper abdominal discomfort is suspicious of gall stones. A CT scan can miss gall stones We rely more on an ultrasound to detect gall stones. If you're not satisfied with your gastroenterologist&amp; are experiencing symptoms suspicious.for gall stones, consult a surgeon.
