Trapezius pain: May be muscle spasm from carrying things on one side more than the other. Try alternating arms. Use moist heat to neck & shoulders. Have friend/partner/massage therapist massage neck & shoulders. Do range-of-motion stretching exercises for neck & shoulders. If no improvement, see doc.

NSAIDs, ice, massage: Start with a scheduled dose NSAID such as Motrin 800mg every 8 hours or naprosyn (naproxen) 500mg twice dailiy as long as you dont have any kidney issues or history of stomach ulcers.  Would also consider icing the area and then potentially a sports massage as well.

The Trapezius Trap: This is a very common site for muscle tension and pain from stress, exercise, poor posture or sitting too long at the computer (or TV, or at the microscope or as a dental hygienist, or staring for hours into a gopher hole...). Short of that, anything more serious would be way down the list, so see if you can massage-out the pain, apply heat,use Motrin and readjust your sitting &amp;standing postures.

Depends: This totally depends on the cause of your neck pain. Strengthening the muscles supporting your neck can help the pain but strengthening some but not all of these muscles can make it worse. You need to work with a physician and/or physical therapist and craft a specific plan to treat the specific cause of your neck pain.
