Yes: It is completely normal and typical to be walking normally with a torn acl. The acl functions in keeping the knee from rotation and shifting. Walking and straight ahead running do not involve stressing the knee enough for the acl to become necessary for stability. Planting and cutting on the affected knee would be less likely after tearing an acl.

Yes: Depends on the time from the injury and the amount of swelling after the injury but most people will be able to walk ( without aids) a week or two after tearing their acl  esp. If the acl tear is not associated w/ other imjuries( mcl tears, meniscus tears, etc) . See an ors who is board certified and a knee specialist. Best of luck!

ACL tear: Not necessarily.  A torn acl will hurt and swell for about a week after which the knee pain improves.  The problem with a knee that has a torn acl is instability and giving way.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Acl tears usually effect cutting moves and changing directions suddenly. Walking or even running straight ahead usually not a problem with an acl tear.

ACL: These are not the typical symptoms. Usually with an acl tear your knee will give out with a pivoting motion.

Yes: If the tear is slight, gait will be altered minimally.  It is not uncommon for the ACL to have been stretched out a bit before the partial tearing occurred.  This would create subtle instability that may not show itself with regualr walking but might become more noticeable with running and cutting during sports.

Avoid: Exercise is important, but low-impact exercise is key for individuals with hip and knee arthritis.  You should try a stationary bike or swimming for exercise.

If the wound is-: -well healed, and this is new swelling, not left over from the surgery, it could B sign of infection, especially if U have pain @rest &amp;have a fever, even if low grade. This needs immediate eval by Ur surgeon.

Yes!: An acl tear makes the knee unable to resist rotational movements that occur when you plan your knee and twist to the opposite side. However, walking and straight-forward running is not usually affected. Older literature describes deficiencies in walking, but that literature is outdated. Acl reconstructions are done to restore rotational and translational stability, not to restore walking.

Yes: You can walk with crutches or a walker following ACL reconstruction.
