Swollen cheek: It would be most important to determine the cause of the swelling . I would suggest a visit to a dentist to determine the cause and then the most effective treatment to reduce the swelling can begin. Without knowing the cause reducing the swelling is fairly ineffectual.

Yup: An infection from a non-vital tooth can spread into your bone and soft tissues. Please call a local dentist and have it promptly treated. Swelling may also be coming from a periodontal infection.

Probably infected: You should call your dentist and ask for an antibiotic. This way since today is sunday and there probably isn't an open office...You can get a jump on controlling the infection and possibly get the troubled tooth worked on or extracted. Or if you're told to wait a few days...The antibiotic will kick in and help control the pain in 36-48 hours. Earl.

Parotid gland: Most likely it is a parotid gland issue. There is a duct inside your mouth next to the back top teeth which releases saliva from the parotid gland in your cheek. If it gets blocked, your cheek may swell. This happens more at mealtime, as your salivary flow increases. You may also have a parotid gland infection. Best to see your Oral Surgeon to check, as they would be the one to treat it. Good Luck

Neurologic or TMJ: May be neurologic. See your GP, Urgent care, or ER immediately, especially if you have any other muscle impairment, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing/talking. If neurologic cause ruled out see your Dentist for evaluation and treatment or referral. some symptoms may be due to oral infection and/or TMJ.

had terrible toothache in upper left tooth. pain went away after three days. x-rays-no root canal needed. gums sore and cheek puffy. root canal needed?

The bottom line: The need for RCT may require a number of tests, observations and history of symptoms and cannot be determined over the internet. See your own dentist or an Endodontist to determine whether or not it is indicated.
