Yes: P vera patients are at higher risk for thrombosis (clotting).  This risk is decreasesed by control of the hct.

Metabolic toxin: Alcohol produces a number of metabolic effects that damage liver cells, cause fat accummulation in liver, liver cell necrosis/death, cirrhosis and liver cancer. Clotting and bruising are not medical terms with reference to hepatocytes.

Alcohol: affects multiple organ systems, not just the liver.  To your question, though, fibrinogen and other clotting factors are produced in the liver.  Alcohol interferes with their production and activity in various ways, to the effect that alchol has both a procoagulant(which would increase clotting) and anticoagulant(the opposite) effects.  Whichever pathway dominates will determine the net effect.

what can thin blood aside from prescription medicine?  my husband has a clotting disorder that drs can't diagnose.  they have tested for all of the factors, sickle cell, etc...  no diagnosis.  he was on coumadin (25 mgs/day) & his level went from .9 to 1.

Difficult issue: A dose of 25 mg of Coumadin (warfarin) is way more than what is effective in most people. It is not uncommon to not be able to find the cause of clotting disorders. There are other anti-cogulants on the market, however given the difficulty in managing your husband's clotting disorder, he may require evaluation and management by a hematologist specializing in coagulation disorders.

Heavy clotting ?'s:  The "heavy clotting" will appear as "black"discharge as when blood oxidizes , it turns dark.  At 53, the infrequent ovulatory cycles occur, and w/o ovulation, the lining of the uterus thickens secondary to sustained estrogen production, allowing breakdown of the lining, with increased blood flow stimulating clot formation.  Ask your GYN about low dose oral bcp's for stopping ovarian estrogen.

Blood derived: The liquid part of blood, called plasma, contains a number of proteins/factors essential for blood clotting.  Some of the factors can be isolated for administration to patients deficient in a given factor, e.g., factor viii for hemophilia.

Yes, high risk: Yes, it will need to be followed closely though and you will be on medication like Lovenox (enoxaparin) most likely.
